Leicester , UK (PRWEB UK) 17 May 2012

An innovative healthcare service has been short-listed for a top national award by the world renowned medical publishers, the BMJ Group. The Leicestershire Fit for Work Service have reached the final four in the “Working in Partnership” category of the BMJ Awards, which are the equivalent of the “Oscars” of the medical world. The final decision on the awards will be made at a ceremony at the London Hilton Hotel on May 23rd.

Simon Calvert, Managing Director of the Leicestershire Fit for Work Service says, “The service we provide is breaking new ground in healthcare and involves careful collaboration with a range of healthcare providers and other services. To be recognised at national level for the excellence of our partnership work is a tribute to the professionalism of the team we have working on the project.”

The Fit for Work service was established in 2010 and aims to reduce sickness absence in companies by case-managed interventions to facilitate an earlier return to work. The team have had over a thousand referrals from GP’s across Leicestershire since they were established, most of which are people who are struggling with mental health or musculo-skeletal problems. Of people who engage with the service 77% return to or stay at work.

Dr Rob Hampton, Clinical Lead for the service says, “In 2008, a government report highlighted the complex network of factors which contribute to people being off work on a long term basis and the need for early intervention. It was this challenge that led the team to develop this innovative pilot for Leicestershire. The success of our approach is of benefit to individuals, companies and the economy as a whole. Work is a fundamental aspect of the human being as a social animal. Being in work, as opposed to being on benefits, is now proven to improve a person’s health. Encouraging more people to work, whatever their problem, is good for local business, the economy, but most importantly to the person’s own health.”

The BMJ awards shortlist highlights how the Leicestershire team built a partnership to create a commissioning group to successfully bid for the pilot project in liaison with a multidisciplinary team to deliver the service. The partnership was built from seven local commissioning bodies including JobCentre Plus, both Primary Care Trusts in the county and both Local Authorities. The team of fourteen people delivering the service are from five local organisations.

Calvert observes, “When you are dealing with complex issues that cut across the remits of a number of organisations it is necessary for those organisations to work together in a co-ordinated partnership. It is the success of this unique partnership, working in collaboration, which has helped us to deliver a service that has been recognised by this nomination.”

Leicestershire Fit for Work

The Fit for Work Service in Leicestershire provides early intervention, designed to enable those in danger of long term sickness absence to return to work as quickly as possible. The services provide one to one case management to help individuals access the help they need and to work with employer and employee to achieve an outcome which ensures continuing employment and minimises the absence period.

The service is a pilot programme, funded by central government, looking at the best ways to provide early intervention support for which present health and employment services do not provide a systematic pathway.

The service is looking to work with the media to build awareness, particular among businesses, of the benefits of early intervention to avoid long term absence. Keeping people in work also has significant social and economic benefits.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Healthcare cost increases have led providers and payers to scrutinize the use of certain clinical services. As a result, a lot of focus is being placed on proper utilization of diagnostic imaging. Many cite inappropriate ordering, self referral and defensive medicine as contributors to these cost increases. However, the clinician treating and seeing patients often finds it a necessity to seek additional insight in order to provide top level care through diagnostic testing that some have deemed to be excessive. We at Foundation Radiology Group actively monitor utilization of services, but ultimately defer to what is going to provide the best patient outcome.

In a recent presentation at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons(AAOS) Annual Conference in March 2012, Dr. S. Patel announced some interesting findings regarding the effectiveness of ordering a knee MRI. The presentation titled “Value of Knee Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the Diagnosis and Management of Knee Disorders” disclosed that MRI frequently changes clinical diagnosis and patient management while improving diagnostic confidence, even when a clinical evaluation is performed by a highly specialized physician. This was most noticeable in the presence of lateral joint line pain and/or tenderness.

The purpose of this study was to determine how frequently the outcome of a MRI of the knee changes clinical diagnosis and management of a patient. The study also sought to prove whether certain characteristics of a patient or ordering physician can affect how knee MRI impacts diagnostic confidence and accuracy.

The study was conducted by three orthopedic surgeons and three sports medicine physicians from a single multispecialty practice who completed surveys on patients that received a knee MRI between June 2010 and January 2011. The pre-MRI survey recorded clinical history, symptoms, physical exam findings, diagnosis with confidence level and planned management. The post-MRI survey recorded diagnosis with confidence level and planned management.

Results showed that MRI changed the primary diagnosis in 29.3% of cases and patient management in 25.3% of cases. MRI changed management in 34.6% (18/52) of cases where a non-surgical management was planned, usually to either surgery or referral to an orthopedic surgeon in 94% of cases (17/18). MRI averted the need for surgery in 13.6% (three/22) of cases and changed the type of surgery in 12.5% (three/24) of cases.

To ensure the most accurate diagnosis for the patient, Foundation Radiology Group also relies on a proactive quality program for clinical assurance and issue review called SAFR (Strategically Aligned Foundation Radiology Quality Review). The program features benchmark imaging read accuracy rates over the national average – 99.6% vs. 96%. It is this type of diagnostic analysis that can help the physician community be confident that he/she ordered the right exam for the patient. Employing such an approach can actually prevent costly surgical procedures or more expensive treatment.

With outcomes based research we can better manage patient care to maximize exam utilization rather than being subject to system wide reimbursement cuts and excessive management of radiology benefits. This type of research approach along with an emphasis on sub-specialty reading, like we perform at Foundation Radiology Group, can help grow and maximize the care provided in orthopedics as well as other service lines. This ensures the highest standards for patient care.

CHIPTS, the Center for HIV Identification Prevention and Treatment Services, at UCLA will begin taking entries for their “UCLA IMPACT 2012” contest on May 15th. This contest encourages submissions from all HIV/AIDS researchers, advocates, and supporters around the world. In an attempt to change the traditional research based format, CHIPTS hopes to reach all demographics and inspire presentations that are both innovative and creative. Examples of acceptable formats include; a written paper, game, PSA, poetry, art, video or music.

Funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, CHIPTS is solely devoted to ending the HIV pandemic, which currently affects 33 million people around the world. The organization works to create new research endeavors, offer technical support to scientists and consult on ongoing projects. In an effort to motivate discussion among HIV researchers and supporters alike, CHIPTS has created “UCLA IMPACT 2012.” This contest offers a platform for emerging researchers and activists to introduce their HIV work on a global level. In addition to gained exposure, the grand prize winner will be awarded ,000 and the runner up, ,000.

Center Director, Mary Jane Rotheram, shares her excitement about the new format of the contest, “I look forward to seeing presentations of all mediums from contestants all around the world. We hope this forum will pave the way for a new method of sharing scientific ideas as they pertain to key social causes.” Sitting on the panel of judges are known activists David Gere and Neil Giuliano. Gere, a professor at UCLA, is involved in projects such as Make Art/Stop AIDS and Through Positive Eyes; two movements that utilize the impact of original art to bring awareness to the AIDS epidemic. Giuliano is the CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. This organization combines scientific research with community knowledge, to guarantee proper HIV care and help reduce the number of new HIV transmissions. All rules and regulations for the “UCLA IMPACT 2012” contest can be viewed on the CHIPTS Facebook page. They will be accepting submissions until July 15th.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

Free Spirit Publishing introduces Zach Apologizes and Zach Gets Frustrated, the first two books in the Zach Rules series written by William Mulcahy and illustrated by Darren McKee. In this series, seven-year-old Zach and his brothers learn how to work through everyday problems like getting along, social issues, and dealing with frustration. Family counselor and psychotherapist Mulcahy wrote the Zach Rules series to teach children social skills and provide practical coping tools for working through the issues that are typical of kids ages 5 to 8. These tools are visually represented in McKee’s illustrations.

The stories are in the Zach Rules series are humorous and realistic (these boys are not angels). In Zach Apologizes, when Zach shoves his little brother to the floor, he knows he did something wrong. Even so, it’s hard to apologize—especially when he feels Alex kind of deserved it! With his Mom’s help, Zach learns the “four-square” apology: 1) say what you did; 2) say how it made the other person feel; 3) say what you could have done instead; 4) make it up to the person. In Zach Gets Frustrated, Zach is having a lousy day at the beach. Zach kicks sand, yells angry words, and asks his dad if they can just go home now. Instead, his dad teaches him the “frustration triangle”—a simple, three-step approach to get a handle on frustration: 1) name it; 2) tame it; 3) reframe it. Each book concludes with a short note to adults to help parents, teachers, counselors, and other grown-ups reinforce the books’ messages and practice the skills with their kids.

In creating these books, Mulcahy wanted to offer practical solutions that kids and their parents would actually use. The skills taught in the books are proven techniques that he uses daily in his counseling practice. “There are so few people who actually know how to apologize . . . most politicians, for example,” Mulcahy says. “Kids will benefit from learning these skills early on—and their parents might learn something from reading these books, too.”

Mulcahy plans to do classroom visits in the Milwaukee area and via Skype to teach kids the messages of the Zach Rules books. He says, “My goal is to provide kids with a road map to building healthy relationships, because that’s what life is all about: relationships.”

Bill’s short stories have appeared in several publications.

Anna Maria Island, FL (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications have been given to more than 48,000 commercial and industrial projects since the process began in March 2000, representing nearly 8 billion sq ft of space in 50 US states and 117 countries.

The Sears and Rosedale Cottages are two of only 14 buildings in Florida to achieve the highest possible standard – Platinum, achieved by a combination of:

1. A leading edge technology platform – a Smart Energy District, in an historic setting

2. Using hot technology (solar PV), a cool approach (geothermal cooling and heating) and a smart energy monitoring system.

The Smart Energy District created provides a real-world, real-time living laboratory for informing future sustainable design projects – what works, what doesn’t, how do the systems perform over time.

In addition, the Village became a Net Zero Energy (NZE) campus, after only 11 months, generating more energy than it uses. To achieve NZE we focused on:

Reducing cooling and heating costs with a well insulated building, energy efficient windows and lighting and geothermal heat pumps
We carefully monitor energy use in real-time to identify where we can achieve additional savings
And we generate electricity and hot water using solar pv and solar thermal panels.

Rick Fedrizzi, Founder and CEO of the USGBC applauded owners Mike & Lizzie Thrasher on their achievement “I extend a personal congratulation to you for having the first two buildings in the Historic Green Village awarded our highest possible designation – LEED Platinum. The project is a remarkable demonstration of your commitment to sustainability. Achieving USGBC LEED Platinum certification and a Net Zero Energy designation means this is one of only a handful of projects in the world to achieve both accomplishments”.

Jennifer McAllister, from the U.S. Green Building Council, presented Mike and Lizzie Thrasher with their LEED Platinum plaque at a champagne reception (May 9th 2012), attended by local County Officials, USGCB Members, Bradenton BRCVB and citizens and businesses in the area.

Lizzie Thrasher said: “Our vision, was to create a showcase for homeowners, building contractors, school students, business and Government decision-makers and influencers – so that they can see what’s possible and can then adapt our ideas in their areas. We hope that our “show and tell” project becomes recognized globally as a benchmark in sustainable working and living”. Thrasher added, “We are delighted that so many people from across the County have come to join us celebrate the rebirth of these historically significant buildings. It is taken a lot of hard work and dedication from an amazing team of people that have invested so much time and passion into what we are creating.”

View the development of the Anna Maria Historic Green Village

Notes

1. The Historic Green Village is a collection of new and old buildings, compassionately restored, and powered completely by renewable energy, to create Florida’s first LEED Platinum and Zero Net Energy Retail Park. The

Village covers 5 lots on Pine Avenue in Anna Maria City and when completed, will contain 7 commercial buildings and 2 rental units. The Village preserves the historic charm and scale of Old Florida, while providing a portfolio of technologies that demonstrates state-of-the-art in sustainable design and development. The Village generates more energy than it consumes (Zero Net Energy)), harvest rainwater and storm water and encourages a range of sustainable transportation choices (bicycling, electric carts and cars, Segways). All of the buildings are designed to meet LEED Platinum level – the highest level of certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

2. The Washington D.C. based USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) is a 501c3 profit organization committed to prosperous and sustainable future through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings. USGBC is the driving force of an industry that is projected to contribute 4 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product from 2009-2013. Buildings in the United States are responsible for 39% of CO2 emissions, 40% of energy consumption, 13% water consumption and 15% of GDP per year, making green building a source of significant economic and environmental opportunity. Greater building efficiency can meet 85% of future U.S. demand for energy, and a national commitment to green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs.

3. LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is an internationally recognized mark of excellence and provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Each of these elements are awarded points, which then equate to either a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum status. For more information: http://www.usgbc.org

AUSTIN, Texas (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

The 3M Half Marathon, one of Austin’s favorite road racing events, announced today that registration is open for the 2013 event, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. The first 500 registrants receive early bird pricing of , and with a 7,000 participant cap, the 2013 race is expected to sell out for the third consecutive year.

Once again the popular point-to-point course will start in Austin’s Arboretum area on Stonelake Blvd. and finish on Congress Avenue at 17th Street, near the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.

The new race date is the earliest the 3M Half Marathon has ever occurred. The new date was chosen to help local distance runners scale up their training in preparation for the Livestrong Austin Marathon on February 17. In addition, race organizers expanded the number of entries for the popular half marathon distance event by eliminating the two-person relay.

“We have made these changes to streamline our event,” said Matt Fagan, 3M Half Marathon race director. “This is a local race, for the local running community. It’s organized by an army of local volunteers, about a third of whom are 3M employees. The changes to the 2013 event will align the event better than ever to the Austin-area running calendar.”

The ,000 race prize purse has been suspended. Organizers will invest in the race infrastructure to keep up with the needs of the expanding field of runners.

As in past years, all registered participants for the 3M Half Marathon will receive a technical moisture-wicking T-shirt. The race’s legendary goodie bag, named “Best Schwag” by Runner’s World, reappears for the nineteenth time. Past bags have featured popular 3M products such as Scotch® Tape, Post-it® Pads, insect repellent, Scotch® Lint Rollers, Scotch-Brite™ Shammy Towels and Scour Pads and Nexcare™ Bandages. Also the health and fitness expo returns in the 2013 race as part of packet pickup.

The rolling, urban course, certified by USA Track and Field (Certification No. TX11169ETM), begins 262 meters (860 feet) above sea level and finishes at 164 meters (545 feet) above sea level. With a 4.5 m/km drop, this fast, mostly downhill course is ideal for setting personal records.

The 2013 event benefits Communities In Schools of Central Texas for the second consecutive year. Communities In Schools provides campus-based programs and special projects via a network of professional staff counselors, volunteers, social service organizations, businesses and community resources to empower students to stay in school and achieve in life. Communities In Schools is part of a national dropout prevention network serving more than 50 campuses in five school districts in Central Texas. A guaranteed ,000 from the 3M Foundation in conjunction with the event will go to Communities In Schools to support these services to help Central Texas’ most at-risk students realize their dreams. Since 3M began sponsoring the 3M Half Marathon, the 3M Foundation has donated more than more than 0,000 to Austin non-profit organizations.

Registration for the event is available online through Jan. 10, 2013, or until the race sells out.

(PRWEB) May 15, 2012

Troux, the global leader in Enterprise Portfolio Management (EPM) and Enterprise Architecture (EA) solutions, today announced results of its recent two-day Troux Worldwide Conference held in Austin, Texas. Over 300 participants from around the globe gathered to hear more than 27 Troux customers presenting their success stories highlighting how their organizations make better decisions using Troux solutions. The conference included speakers from AstraZeneca, Caterpillar, Cisco, Fidelity, Northwestern Mutual, USAA, Vodafone, Volkswagen Group of America and many others.

At the conference Troux launched its vision for the evolution of EA: Enterprise Portfolio Management.

“Enterprise Portfolio Management (EPM) is about the practical and real-time application of EA as a management discipline to enable enterprises to understand themselves, their markets and the opportunities that new technologies bring”, said Bill Cason, CTO of Troux, at the conference.

“The customers here are among the first to understand the significance of EPM; they have harnessed the power of EPM and understand how this approach helps synchronize their business with their IT organizations to drive more informed decisions across the enterprise,” continued Cason.

“The Troux Worldwide Conference was exhilarating. As a research analyst and former senior enterprise architect with one of the largest U.S. banks, it’s great to see that EA is going strong. Troux is to be commended for their leadership in creating such a valuable event,” said Charlie Betz, research director, Enterprise Management Associates.

“I was impressed to see such energy and engagement at the Troux conference again this year,” said Angela Yochem, CTO, AstraZeneca. “It was great to have so many senior leaders and architects from around the world in one place, challenging the limits of traditional EA and driving the practice forward.”

Denver, CO and New York, NY (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

iTriage® has been named a corporate sponsor for Cutting For A Cure, which reinforces its commitment to providing free health information and raising awareness of curable diseases through early detection. As a leading consumer mobile and Web application, iTriage helps people answer the two most common medical questions: What could be wrong? and Where should I go for treatment? The third annual Cutting for a Cure 48-hour hair cutting marathon will take place July 20-22, 2012 at Denny Moe’s Superstar Barbershop in Harlem.

Funds raised through Cutting For A Cure provide education and free health screenings by a team of medical personnel from Harlem Hospital, Iris House and Barbershop Quartet. The screenings will take place at Denny Moe’s Barbershop in Harlem from Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22, and will test for diseases ranging from diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, kidney disease, hepatitis and HIV. The theme of Cutting For a Cure 2012 is to thank First Responders including NYPD and NYFD for their contributions and support.

Cutting For A Cure is the brainchild of barber/groomer Dennis “Denny Moe” Mitchell, who felt compelled to take action after being diagnosed in 2010 with Type II diabetes. “Most African-American men don’t like to go to the doctor or even discuss their health,” he explained. “There is a need for raising awareness of health issues that unevenly affect minorities in urban areas, and the neighborhood barbershop is the ideal gathering place to educate the community that disease prevention is the best method of living a healthy life.”

In addition to providing hair cuts and free health screenings, the third annual Cutting For A Cure will offer live entertainment for all ages, healthy food samples and individual health consultations.

As a corporate sponsor of Cutting For A Cure, iTriage provides mobile and Web users with on-the-go access to healthcare information about symptoms, diseases, procedures and medications. Created by physicians, iTriage also contains a nationwide database of hospitals, urgent care centers, retail clinics, pharmacies and physicians.

Downloaded more than six million times, iTriage is available for free from the iTunes® app store and the Android™ Marketplace, and is also accessible from any Internet-enabled device at http://www.iTriageHealth.com.
